Conor McGregor's shoulder was the decisive weapon as the Irishman made an emphatic return to the Octagon with a first round win over Donald Cerrone.

Cowboy, who holds the record for the most wins and finishes in UFC history, was defeated in 40 seconds at UFC 246 because of a deadly start to proceedings from McGregor in his first fight in 15 months.

And it all started with McGregor smashing Cerrone with a number of shoulder strikes in the clinch - breaking his nose and possibly even his cheekbone in the process.

A brutal head kick and ground and pound brought about the stoppage from referee Herb Dean, who had no choice but to intervene and award McGregor his 22nd victory in MMA.

It was a genius strategy from McGregor and his coaching team - and one that Cerrone did not see coming whatsoever.

"He got me with an elbow straight away and then he headkicked me," Cerrone said post-fight, as per Metro.

"I have never seen anything like the shoulder shot he hit me with. I was disorientated. Then he stepped back, I was bleeding and he head kicked me.

"But I love this sport and I am not stopping yet."

McGregor, who has now become the first fighter to score knockouts at welterweight, featherweight and lightweight, talked about the thought behind the use of his left shoulder in his post-fight interview with the Octagon.
