Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz have been going at it on Dana White's Instagram, fuelling talk of a highly-anticipated trilogy bout.

UFC president White reposted McGregor's message to all those competing at the historic UFC 249 event in Jacksonville tonight and the outspoken Diaz decided to tell his rival to be quiet in the only he knows.

"Shut your bitchass up," Diaz wrote in the comments.

But McGregor fired back at his rival, writing: "Shut your eye lid and sign the contract!"

Diaz made McGregor tap out in their welterweight bout and inflicted his first defeat at UFC 196 before the Irishman levelled matters with a decision victory in an absolute war at UFC 202 in the summer of 2016.

Both have expressed interest in having the series settled in the form of a massive third fight and it seems as though it could genuinely be happening in the near future.

There's even been talk of the bout happening on the 'Fight Island' that White hopes to have off the ground and ready to pump out fights next month.

According to ESPN's Ariel Helwani, the Tony Ferguson vs Justin Gaethje interim lightweight title fight hints at the trilogy fight happening.

"OK, what if Gaethje wins, you ask? Then he fights Nurmagomedov, right? Again, freeing up McGregor," Helwani said.

"Now, in this scenario they could do Ferguson vs. McGregor, but I also feel like either May 9 scenario opens the door to make the trilogy fight between Diaz and McGregor.

"So, if May 9 actually happens, don't be surprised if Diaz emerges as a player in the McGregor sweepstakes."

McGregor recently returned to welterweight by making quick work of Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone in January after a lengthy hiatus, while Diaz was defeated by Jorge Masvidal in the battle for the BMF title in November.

Make it happen, Dana.
