In a moment of madness at the CES MMA 48 event, fighter Timothy Woods suffered defeat after he accidentally knocked himself out while trying to take down opponent Tim Caron.

As they grappled on the side of the cage, Woods locked in the whizzer and attempted to throw Caron down but in an unusual set of circumstances he instead KO'd himself when his forehead smashed against the canvas.

Caron was declared the winner after just 83 seconds as Woods lay motionless.

It was a strange and frightening experience for those watching in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

As you can see in the footage above, the fighter was knocked out cold from his own move as Caron looked on, confused by the events that had just unfolded.

Thankfully after the fight had finished, Woods was eventually removed from the cage responsive and moving his arms when being carried out on a stretcher.

You can see him regaining consciousness in the clip below.

Woods, who is the owner of Good Soldier MMA Academy according to his social media profile, took to Twitter after the bell to thank his fans for their concern:

"To all fans and supporters, thank you for your unwavering positivity and support. It means the world to me!" he said.

It's not very often you come across a fighter who literally knocks himself out.

Madness.
