The Notorious One pulled out of a live TV appearance when he got a call about his aunt's death, then hit out at "this f**king virus" on Instagram.

McGregor was due to go on US television and brought his family to the studio, when he received tragic news.

"I get a phone call telling me that my lovely little auntie Anne had passed away," he explained on social media. "I couldn't go live anymore. My poor little friendly loving auntie. My mother's sister."

McGregor then continued to bemoan the coronavirus pandemic - although it should be noted that the 31-year-old did not explicitly say that the illness had played a part in his aunt's passing.

"This stupid f**king virus. What the f**k is happening. I took my family to bull island. Looked out at the sea. Took a deep breath. Thank f**k! Lord thank you.

"Stay tight people! We are all we got. Rest in Peace Anne Moore I love you."

So far, the Republic of Ireland has 90 confirmed cases of the coronavirus with two reported deaths. In the same post, McGregor praised his country's efforts to contain the outbreak.

"Ireland you amazing, amazing country," he wrote, adding: "The good habits we will have now gained from this wild covid-19 attack will see us too strong in future.

"Hand hygiene. Touching of own face hygiene. Consistent thorough cleaning of handled areas hygiene."

McGregor also explained that he'd train so hard in the past, his immune system would be affected - a common problem that athletes face.

"The immune system will always be tested. I would float around in this manner, and always end up catching little colds and flus. I feel bullet proof right now though!"

His sister, Erin McGregor, followed the UFC star's lead and shared an Instagram post about her aunt.

"You to me are one of the strongest women I know," she wrote. "Nothing phased you and no matter what you just got on with it... No matter what ever happens my mam's family would always have your back."

Desperately sad news for the McGregor clan at a testing time.
