Conor McGregor Responds In Typical Fashion To Tony Ferguson's Injury

Ferguson was due to face Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223 on Saturday but has been replaced by Max Holloway.

You didn't expect Conor McGregor to just say nothing did you? Especially now that the belts he's never lost could both be around the waist of the same person after Tony Ferguson dropped out of his fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov this weekend.

Conor McGregor hasn't been seen or heard of in a while when it comes to UFC. The only fight he's had since November 2016 was in a boxing ring against Floyd Mayweather.

In that time the Irishman has had to hand over the featherweight title he beat Jose Aldo for and, whilst never officially stripped of it, he's seen the UFC set up another fight for his lightweight belt that didn't include him.

That fight was supposed to be between American Ferguson and Russian Khabib but not for the first time the fight between the pair won't take place. On Sunday night Ferguson dropped out and was replaced with new featherweight champion Max Holloway.

There has been plenty of reaction to the fact that this is the fourth time the two lightweights have been supposed to meet but ultimately will not and it's no surprise that McGregor's is the most eye catching of them all:

McGregor is the man whose shadow shines over the division, in fact the entire company, and on Saturday will have effectively lost two belts without ever losing a fight for them.

What makes life even more intriguing is the winner of the main event at UFC 223 will either be a man who has repeatedly called the Notorious one out or a man who will hold both the belts the Irishman never lost.

Check out our video on some of Conor McGregor's best quotes:

When Ferguson dropped out of the fight Dana White was inevitably asked why McGregor wasn't the replacement with White explaining that the 29 year old deserved a bigger build for his return to the octagon, telling ESPN, "I don't think Conor McGregor could make the weight on six days notice. That's a tough weight cut for him. And Conor isn't exactly the guy I want to throw in as a late replacement fighter.

"He's a guy I want to make a fight with, have the right amount of time to promote the fight, have the fight in the right place. No, I'm not interested in asking Conor to take the fight. I think that Conor could return in September and it could be against one of these guys."

A September return against the winner could be the next time we see McGregor, and that would be quite the spectacle.
