TJ Dillashaw has relinquished his UFC Bantamweight title after testing positive for a banned substance following his flyweight title loss against Henry Cejudo at UFC Fight Night in January.

Twice last year TJ Dillashaw surprised Cody Garbrandt by knocking out the former UFC bantamweight champion on both occasions, first to win the title and then to defend it.

In January the 33 year old stepped down in weight in an attempt to become a dual weight champion when he faced Henry Cejudo for the flyweight title in Brooklyn, New York.

Dillashaw lost the fight with Cejudo, who had ended Demetrious Johnson's reign as flyweight champion, ending his first defence in the first round.

On Wednesday the American took to Instagram to inform his fans that there had been an 'adverse finding' in his post fight drugs test following the fight and would be relinquishing his title:

As per ESPN's Ariel Helwani the New York State Athletic Commission have suspended Dillashaw for 12 months 'for violations relating to use of a prohibited substance,' with the ban retrospectively beginning on January 19th.

The now former champions has also been hit with a $10,000 fine for the violation and could still face a further ban should USADA decide to punish him for longer.

Ahead of his shot at the flyweight title Dillashaw had claimed he was there to end the division saying, "The UFC wants to get rid of the division and they hired me to go down and close it and get another belt in the process.

"It's a win-win for me. They're paying me a (expletive) load of money to move down and kill the 125-pound division and collect a second belt. So, it's game time."

Instead it was Cejudo who won the fight, ending it after just 32 seconds, and he was due to get a rematch, but this time for his rivals bantamweight title.

Speaking to ESPN Cejudo's head coach, Eric Albarracin, said, "This sucks. Henry wanted that rivalry/money fight and the 135-pound belt and to shut the critics up once and for all...This throws a wrench in our plans. It's early and haven't spoke with Henry yet. However if I know Henry, he still wants that belt, because he is chasing a legacy, or Joe Benavidez might get served up a cold plate of Aztec Warrior revenge."
