Ryder Cup 2016: Betting Preview

Ryder Cup 2016: Betting Preview

The Ryder Cup is an event that transcends golf in its normal fashion, in the opinion of many even eclipsing the sports 4 majors of the year in its ability to bring new fans to the game, even if for only a week!

Is it the team element of Europe vs USA, the small field of only the sports very top golfers, electric match play format or a combination of them all that makes this such a unique offering? Either way this is THE great sporting spectacle of this autumn and something not to be missed from 30th September to 2nd October!

As for the betting market, being a two horse race and largely dominated by the European's in recent years (although USA are fav's this time around) there is little to get overly excited about in the way of outright markets. However the depth of additional places to punt is wide spread, with my particular favourite being the Top scoring individuals section.

Top Debutant

This year sees more rookies of the event competing for their first time than for many years, meaning there are lots options and also some great value available! The shortest price is this years Masters champion Danny Willet. However, short of recent form, I wont be backing him at 5/1.

Instead my tip goes to Ryan Moore, who has just been awarded the American's final captain's pick for their side. Fresh from a dramatic narrow play-off defeat to Rory McIlroy in the season ending Tour championship, where he showed he has more than the minerals and game required for the fearsome match play duels ahead and offers a fair price of 6/1 at BetVictor in a market of only 8 runners.

Top Scoring Player

Again a small market of only 24, but there is still value a-plenty. Whilst Dustin Johnson, the standout player of the season, tops the bill at 7/1; my two tips for this are Jordan Speith and Andy Sullivan.

Jordan (available at 8/1 with BetVictor) has had a largely disappointing year in comparison to the standard he now sets himself following his stand out 2015. However, he is a warrior of a competitor and with that Putting wand of his, I think he could well finish the year off by causing some serious damage to European hopes.

This could be the case, particularly in the pairs matches, where I expect him to be 'buddied' up with Patrick Reed again, the pairing which was the only bright light of the Americans defeat to Team Europe last time around in Gleneagles.

Andy Sullivan is my outside pick here who is available at a massive 66/1 and I think he could really shine in this team format off the back of some excellent form towards the end of the season.
