In 2015, Louis van Gaal's 'Red Army' lost to Middlesbrough on penalties after a bore draw at Old Trafford. Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young and Michael Carrick all failed to convert their spot-kicks resulting in Manchester United crashing out in the fourth round.

It was the third time in four League Cup meetings that United had been knocked out by non-Premier League opposition.

Back in 2011, Championship side Crystal Palace knocked United out of the League Cup in the quarter final. Darren Ambrose opened the scoring at Old Trafford with a stunner from 35-yards. However, the lead didn't last long as Federico Macheda pulled it level just minutes later. It was Glenn Murray who headed home the winner in extra-time to send Palace through to the semi-finals.

League One side Leeds United stunned the Manchester side in 2010 as they knocked out the English giants in the FA Cup third round. Jermaine Beckford scored the only goal of the game at Old Trafford as Leeds, who were 42 places behind 'The Red Devils' in the football league ladder, came away 1-0 winners. It was also Sir Alex Ferguson's first FA Cup defeat to lower league opposition in his 23-year long stint at 'The Theatre of Dreams.'
