Wigan Warriors won their first Super League Grand Final since 2013 having lost in the 2015 and 2016 editions. Warrington Wolves fell just short again and continued their run of not winning the title since 1955.

Warriors took an early lead when Matty Smith kicked over a penalty for a 2-0 lead but despite a fast start from Wigan they couldn't make another break through.

Declan Potter scored a try after 25 minutes to take the lead for the Wire after a period of pressure in which they could have had a couple more. The youngster added the two from his own try.

In the 54th minute Ryan Atkins thought he'd gone over to add to Wolves lead but the video review showed that he'd dropped the ball. It would prove to be a huge moment.

Just moments later Liam Farrell broke free and played in Oliver Gildart to go over for 6-6. Smith missed the conversion but just five minutes later Josh Charnley made it 10-6 from a great kick by Dan Sarginson.

The pair are both leaving Wigan and Charnley's try was a brilliant way to sign off his league career before a move to Sale and union.

Whilst Matty Smith would miss the extras again he did get the chance to add two from a penalty that he took for a 12-6 lead.

Shaun Wane's side had to dig deep and defend brilliantly late on as Tony Smith's side searched and searched for a way back into the game but Wigan's defence held strong.
