Very quiet track!

At the Olympics you expect to be racing against the best of the best but the U.S Women's 4x100m team they were competing against absolutely no one, well kind of. This has to be the weirdest race at the Olympics ever.

On Thursday afternoon it looked like there was about to be a huge shock in the women's 4x100m semi-final as the US team dropped the baton on the way round and the reigning champions looked set to miss out on a place in the final.

However they protested the result of the race and on replay it showed that the Brazilian team, impeding on the American's lane, had been at fault for them dropping the baton. That disqualified Brazil from the race but what to do with the American foursome? They had to race against the clock in the loneliest race ever:

The time was quick enough to see them qualify for the final but to be honest it's difficult not to have hoped they'd stepped out of their lane or dropped the baton or some other huge fuck up. Out on their own on track, nobody else to watch, it would have made for hilariously awkward television.

Still though, arguably the most bizarre race in the Olympics.
