Michael Van Gerwen’s Opening Leg Just Shows He’s On Another Level

Michael Van Gerwen’s Opening Leg Just Shows He’s On Another Level

The defending world champion won't be giving up his title easily if his match on Friday night is anything to go by.

The PDC World Championships hasn't quite reached the Christmas break but it would take a brave man to bet against Michael van Gerwen taking away the title for the third time, especially after last night's performance.

Even before the championships kicked off it wouldn't exactly have been a 'hot take' to suggest that MvG was going to defend his world title from January again next month but then came round one and it became even more likely.

Seeds Dave Chisnall, Jelle Klaasen, Stephen Bunting Jonny Clayton, James Wade, Mervyn King, Mark Webster, Benito van de Pas, Joe Cullen and most surprisingly Adrian Lewis were all knocked out before the second round.

MvG though went through pretty easily in the first round and he beat Christian Kist 3-1 to set up a second round with 32nd seed James Wilson on Friday and right from the off MvG was in form.

The Dutchman didn't drop a single set as he won 4-0 against the Brit and the writing was on the walls for Wilson from the first leg, which Van Gerwen won with a 142 check out- against the throw!

If the first leg at Ally Pally was foreboding of what was to come then his finish really rounded off the story. His checkout might have only been 24 in the end but it was the 180 that came before it when it looked like Wilson might nick a leg back:

The world number one has won the Grand Slam, Premier League, European Championships, Players Championship and Masters this year and his domination shows no signs of slowing after averaging 108.65 last night!

Wilson took to Twitter after the match and summed up his opponents performance in one simple word:

Wilson didn't even play badly, it's just that MvG is playing a different sport to everyone else right now.

Is there anyone that can stop Mighty Mike?
