Women's Championship Match Main Events Raw For Only The Second Time In History

On the latest episode of Monday Night Raw, Sasha Banks and Charlotte took another step towards revolutionising women's wrestling, with the Raw Women's Championship match main eventing the show - for only the second time in history a Women's match closed out the show.

The last time that happened was in similar circumstances, Trish Stratus and Lita were long-time rivals and were two of the premier female athletes in the company. In a period where women were largely seen as nothing more than eye-candy in the wrestling world, they were pushing the boundaries and their perseverance led to them main eventing Raw in 2004.

Unfortunately that was only one of few times the women were allowed to tell story and had fans totally invested, as more of the same dross was served up when it came to women's wrestling. There was no real reason to want to watch women's wrestling in WWE when the title had a pink butterfly on it.

NXT, the company's third brand spearheaded by Triple H, placed a great emphasis on women's wrestling and reaped the rewards with show-stealing matches featuring the likes of Bayley, Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks and Charlotte. All four would eventually get called up to the main roster, with the latter three debuting on Raw in July 2015.

However, it was still difficult to get the same investment in women's wrestling in WWE's flagship shows. That was until Wrestlemania 32 came around, the female athletes featured in the middle of the posters around the Stadium. Charlotte, Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch in a triple threat was one of the most eagerly anticipated bouts on a stacked card - the news that the Divas Championship would be scrapped in place of the new Women's Championship only increasing exciting levels.

Since then, Sasha and Charlotte have been involved in a bitter feud that saw a couple of title changes along the way; Banks winning the strap on Raw before losing less than a month later at Summerslam in a rematch.

'The Boss' was entitled to her one-on-one rematch though, and after seeing Bayley take the pin a triple threat match for the Raw Women's title at Clash of Champions, activated it last night in the main event of Raw. Charlotte's protege Dana Brooke was not at ringside having been taken out of the picture by Bayley.

Like previous battles, with the likes of former boxer Oscar De La Hoya and players from LA Dodgers and LA Rams in attendance at the Staples Center, the superstars pushed their bodies to the absolute limit in the rubber match.

It was Sasha Banks, who cites Eddie Guerrero as her idol, who prevailed in this epic encounter to become a two-time Raw Women's Champion, tapping out Charlotte with her tried and trusted Bank Statement submission.

The revival of women's wrestling continues. What next, then? Charlotte has the right to have a rematch for the title, which could very well come at the upcoming Hell in a Cell pay-per-view. It makes sense to capitalise further on what the women are producing by making history inside Hell in a Cell. If there's one feud that warrants such a stipulation, it's this one.

Kudos to both women for the work they have done, but truth be told, they are only just getting started.

There's plenty more to come...
