UFC staged their first event in New York City following the legalisation of the sport in the state, and the promotion went all out delivering an epic card with not one but THREE title fights for UFC 205.

The mega card was topped with a clash pitting UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez against the UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor.

McGregor was chasing an unprecedented landmark tonight, and he was done so by becoming the very first fighter in the promotions storied history to hold two UFC titles in two different divisions, simultaneously.

A series of stinging left-hands dropped Alvarez numerous times in the first round before the champion succumbed to McGregor's power in the second.

The Irishman's ninth victory under the Zuffa banner improves his professional record to 21-3 while adding the UFC lightweight title to his featherweight crown but according to Dana White he'll be forced to forfeit one or the other going forward.

UFC president confirmed his stance during fight week claiming one of the belts will have to be vacated in order to avoid a log-jam of contenders.

It's not the first time McGregor is a duel-weight champion following his exploits in Cage Warriors winning both the CWFC feather and lightweight belts in 2012.
