A French retailer has leaked the price of the PlayStation 5 after listing the console online for €499.

Sony officially showed off their next-generation console back in June but have left fans waiting for an official price and release date.

Carrefour may have beaten Sony to the announcement, briefly listing the PS5 standard edition and digital edition on their website for €499 (£447) and €399 (£360.)

The listing has since been pulled but eagle-eyed gamers manage to grab screenshots of the product page.

It's unlikely that the prices are straight up converted but the cost won't change too wildly.

Some have speculated that the price listings could be placeholders as all the additional accessories on the product page are the same price.

It's unlikely that the DualSense controller will cost the same as the media remote, with both listed at €49.90.

An official price and release date being set for the PS5 doesn't seem too far away however.

Bloomberg per TechRadar have reported that in addition to this Thursday's State of Play event, Sony are also preparing for a PS5 announcement event later in the month.

Microsoft are also yet to announce the price of their next console, Xbox Series X, but it's believed that'll come in cheaper than the PS5.

According to the Beyond 3D forum, it could be nearly £150 cheaper with 'Eastman' posting, "I am not sure what the final price will be. I think if Sony is $500/$600, MS may try to go in at $200/$400/$500 but we will see."

When asked about a price point earlier this year, Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan said: "I think the best way that we can address this is by providing the best possible value proposition that we can.

"I don't necessarily mean lowest price. Value is a combination of many things. In our area it means games, it means number of games, depth of games, breadth of games, quality of games, price of games... all of these things and how they avail themselves of the feature set of the platform."

One game that fans are looking forward to is FIFA 21.

EA Sports have promised that a 'new generation' of the franchise is coming and cover star Kylian Mbappe embodies the 'future of FIFA.'

It will also be released on Xbox One and PS4 but many are more curious about the next-gen offerings.

Will you be buying a PS5 or Xbox Series X?
