WWE Superstar was the host of the ESPY Awards, last night

As the host of ESPN's 'ESPY' Awards last night, even John Cena himself questioned the logic behind why someone from "the red headed stepchild of sport and entertainment" was chosen to host the biggest sporting award show of the year.

Then the 15 time World Champion figured it out.

In a monologue so good it could have headlined WrestleMania, the one time 'Doctor of Thuganomics' compared the NBA and the NFL to WWE storyline arcs, noting LeBron James' heel turn, leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers for Miami Heat before once again becoming a good guy by heading back to the Cavs to lift the title. Steph Curry also got a mention for being the NBA's next biggest villain to take over from LeBron. And just for good measure, Cena compared NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to his maniacal, billionaire WWE boss Vince McMahon.

Cena didn't stop there, though, as there was still another slew of jokes on the way, targeting everyone from recently retired greats such as Kobe Bryant and Peyton Manning to Irish golfing trio Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry and Graham McDowell, who the WWE superstar dropped with the line "Irish golfers Rory McIlroy, Graham McDowell and Shane Lowry pulled out of the Olympics because of the Zika virus. Which is surprising because the Irish aren't really known for pulling out".

Big Match John was certainly in fine form and received plenty of plaudits for his performance:
