Such a shame

17 time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer has had to rule himself out of the Rio Olympics, US Open, ATP Tour finals and the whole of the rest of the season.

The tennis legend, who recently lost at the semi finals of Wimbledon to losing finalist Milos Raonic, was set to compete in Rio for the Olympic title, one of the few major singles titles he's never held.

However the 34 year old confirmed on his Facebook page that in order to be able to extend his career for the next few years he was in need of longer rest and rehabilitation following a knee injury earlier this year.

Everyone connected with the sport will be hoping that Federer recovers in his time off and comes back as strong as ever.

What is a shame is he'll almost certainly never win gold medal in the single's at the Olympics.

Good luck Roger!
