BREAKING: Ban On Russian Athletics For Olympics Upheld

A good decision.

The fallout from two reports into doping in Russian sports continues to grow with the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling to keep the ban on all Russian athletes taking part in the Olympic Games. The impact is likely to lead the IOC to put a blanket ban on the country competing in Rio next month.

The IAAF had put the ban on the country's athletics team due to a report into doping in the country's system. Those issues were further highlighted by the McLaren report last week that said that doping throughout 30 different sports had been state sponsored.

CAS' decision means that Russia will not compete in the track and field events at the Rio Games and it could now trigger the International Olympic Committee into banning the country from taking part in any sport with the IOC waiting for today's decision.

IAAF President Sebastian Coe said, "While we are thankful that our rules and our power to uphold our rules and the anti doping code have been supported, this is not a day for triumphant statements. I didn't come into this sport to stop athletes from competing. It is our federation's instinctive desire to include, not exclude. Beyond Rio the IAAF Taskforce will continue to work with Russia to establish a clean safe environment for its athletes so that its federation and team can return to international recognition and competition."

Russia is likely to lose the chance to host the 2019 European Games because of the scandal.
