Attack On French Olympic Delegation In Rio Thwarted By Security Services

Following the horrific attack on the streets of Nice last night the world is once again in a state of high alert to terrorist attacks. Another plot on a French delegation in Rio has been stopped by security services.

The Olympics, as with every major sporting event following the November attacks on Paris which included an attack on the Stade de France during an international friendly between France and Germany, and security will be even higher following a foiled plan to attack a French delegation.

General Christophe Gomart, head of the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DRM) made the plans known to a parliamentary commission in May and have now been made public. The commission heard that the plan in Rio had been made by a Brazilian national.

The French authorities did not make any other details of the plot available However Brazil's security cabinet said they had no information on the planned attack saying, "We were not the source of information and the Brazilian intelligence agency (ABIN) was not officially informed either of this matter."

Security will obviously be of high importance during The Games and one hopes they go off without incident as the Euros did earlier this month. 47,000 police officers and 38,000 soldiers will be stationed in Rio during The Olympics.

The attack last night took place on Bastille Day, a day of celebration in France that celebrates the storming of the Bastille, with a lorry being driven into hordes of people before it's driver shot at people before being shot dead. 84 have died in the attack. Our thoughts are with those involved.
