Rio de Janeiro will be the focus of the sporting world for the second time in two years this summer when it holds the Olympics but ahead of the games there is problems in the city.

Ahead of the football World Cup two years ago there was lots of negative stories about Brazil and Rio especially with marches against the government. However nothing went wrong during the competition.

With the Olympics just one month away the Mayor of Rio has ripped into the state and its handling of policing around the city,

Speaking to CNN about the city's violent crime Eduardo Paes said, "This is the most serious issue in Rio and the state is doing a terrible, horrible job. It's completely failing at its work of policing and taking care of people."

The state government has requested funds from the federal government to help pay for a police force that is currently owed money for overtime and bonuses.

85,000 additional officers, from other states and the military, are believed to be joining Rio's force for the Olympic games however there has been many recent crimes committed around the Games.

A German broadcaster had $40,000 worth of equipment stolen at gunpoint from their van whilst a Paralympic athlete was also held at gunpoint.

The Mayor did say that headlines about the Zika virus were "overestimated" saying, "At this time, if you are American, please don't go to Florida. You have more cases of Zika in Florida now than we have in Rio."
