Emma Raducanu’s fairy tale in New York has seen her become the bookies’ overwhelming favourite to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
This sporting year seemed destined to be special - and Raducanu’s rapid climb up the ranks has, almost certainly, written an unforgettable new chapter in the story of 2021.
The 18-year-old has gone from a rank outsider to one of the hottest names in tennis after coming through qualifying to win one of the sport’s biggest prizes and becoming the first British woman in 44 years to win one of the four Grand Slams.
In just a few months, the teenage prodigy has gone from being ranked 338 in the world to being a global superstar and the new number 23 seed.
Her fantastic feat is highlighted by the swing of betting odds after the teenager was smashed into the odds-on favourite following her recent triumph.
The move has seen her odds dramatically tumble from 500/1 in less than a month to win BBC’s coveted award.
Since her historic win, Raducanu has been smashed into as short as 1/20 with some firms - catapulting her above Olympic heroes Tom Daley and Adam Peaty, along with seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton.
Incredibly, the teenager could become the first woman since equestrianism's Zara Phillips 15 years ago to win the award.
Her US Open triumph was talked about so much that "BBC Sports Personality" became a trending term on social media.
The award is decided by a public vote in December after an expert panel has announced a shortlist, but here are some of the leading names in the frame.
Odds are correct at the time of publication and are, as always, subject to change.
