Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson has claimed the title of Europe's strongest man for the fifth time.

Perhaps better known for his portrayal of 'The Mountain' in hit HBO series Game of Thrones, the real life giant celebrated his colossal victory at the competition in Leeds yesterday.

The 30-year-old announced the news on his Instagram page, writing: "Europe's Strongest Man for the 5th time! So blessed to have such great people behind me! Team Iceland baby. Huge thank you to all my family, my beautiful wife and all my friends for all the help and support!!"

In order to take home the crown of the continent's strongest, Björnsson dead-lifted and held a staggering amount of weight, carrying out 10 reps of the 770lbs weight.

But as well as this, he also took part in the log lift challenge, the tyre flip, an Atlas stone lift, and then the 'pillars of Hercules', in which the strongman had to hold two chains in order to stop two 350-pound-plus pillars from falling down.

Björnsson says his family inspires him to not just compete but to win.

The strongman claimed the tile after dead-lifting a ton.

Speaking to Men's Health earlier this year, he said: "I think about everything I've done - all the hard work, sweat, and tears. And I think of my daughter [Theresa]."

The Icelandic strong man finished ahead of Poland's Mateusz Kieleszkowski and Georgia's Konstantine Janashia, who came in second and third, respectively.

In preparation for competing against Europe's finest, Björnsson said he was eating thousands of calories a day to help build the muscle he needed to win.

Speaking to Page Six, the strongman said he was 'focused' on winning, revealing: "I can lift 1,000lb, and I eat 10,000 calories a day. I have to eat every two hours to maintain myself."

Now, whereas some larger men may have trouble finding the right clothes to wear, Björnssonhad bigger issues.

He's probably better known for his portrayal of 'The Mountain' in Game of Thrones.

He added: "'I am flying there - but I can't fit my hips or my legs in an economy seat, so I have to fly business... I have been working out every day to prepare for the competition."

Fans of GoT will be aware, that sadly, 'The Mountain' is no more. But ahead of the eighth season, you can check out all the latest gossip and fan theories from the series Game Of Thrones: Westeros Posting on Facebook.
