A female footballer has showed how to battle on with an injury after she dislocated her knee during a match in the Scottish league.

St Mirren WFC captain Jane O'Toole was in the middle of a drubbing from Inverness Caledonian Thistle when she flipped over and hurt her leg.

Shocking footage has now been released by the club showing the moment she found herself in a bit of bother after coming off on the wrong side of a challenge.

In the brief clip, Jane can be seen challenging an Inverness player, clashing with her as she kicks the ball to safety. But as she bounces off her opponent, Jane is thrown to the ground, where she rolls over and lands awkwardly on her leg.

At first, it doesn't appear as though anything has happened, just the usual hustle and bustle you get in sport.

However, looking a little closer, it becomes clear that her knee cap is suddenly on the other side of her leg. Yikes.

But being the courageous leader that she is, Jane sits up and starts bashing at her leg as hard as possible until it returns to its usual shape.

Now, while most of us would assume this would be cause for a substitution, Jane is made of sterner stuff, and played on for the rest of the match, despite her side being 6-0 down at the time.

I guess this is a reminder that top level sport is not for the faint-hearted.

Another grim example comes from last year, when an Auburn University gymnast in the United States was carried from the floor on a stretcher after breaking both her legs attempting an acrobatic move.

Auburn University's Samantha Cerio suffered the horrific injuries during the Baton Rouge Regional, an event on the National Collegiate Athletic Association calendar.

Cerio was attempting her first go at a handspring double front flip with a blind landing - one for the gymnastics experts out there - but came up just short and sent both her legs bending backwards unnaturally.

The exact injuries haven't been identified exactly by Auburn University, but Nola.com reported that she broke both legs and dislocated her knees. Painful stuff, and that's just watching it.

Her coach, Jeff Graba, said afterwards: "It was pretty tough to watch. She's a trooper. The last thing she said was, 'Go help the girls.' The girls rallied around her. They're doing this for her right now."
