The daughter of former Barcelona FC player and manager Luis Enrique has died aged just nine years old following a battle with cancer.

The 49-year-old recently stepped down from his role as Spain's national team manager to care for Xana during her fight against osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.

The former attacking midfielder - capped 62 times by his country - said: "You will be the star that guides our family,

"We will miss you very much but we will remember you every day of our lives in the hope that in the future we will meet again."

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) also noted their own condolences in a statement that said they "mourns the sad loss of little Xana" and "wants to show our condolences to family and friends, joining us all today to their pain".

Enrique, who made 301 appearances as a player for Barcelona and guided them to two La Liga titles and a Champions League success in 2015, announced his daughter's sad passing.

He said: "Our daughter Xana has died this afternoon at the age of 9, after struggling for five intense months with osteosarcoma."

"We thank you for all the love received during these months and we appreciate the discretion and understanding.

"We would also like to give personal thanks to the hospitals Sant Joan de Deu and Sant Pau for their dedication and treatment and to all the volunteers, with a special mention to the palliative priests at Sant Joan de Deu."

Many current Barcelona players and former charges of Enrique have also tweeted their support.

Former Liverpool striker, now at the Catalan club, said: "Moment of much pain and sadness. Rest in peace XANITA. A lot of strength Luis, Elena and family."

Everton striker Gerard Deulofeu said: "Rest in peace Xana. All the strength of the world for Luis Enrique and the family. Without words we stay."

Barcelona's arch rivals, Real Madrid, for whom Enrique also played for five years, sent a message of condolence.

They said that they "join the pain" of the family and "want to convey their deepest condolences to them at these difficult times".

That sentiment was echoed by AS Roma, who were another of Enrique's managerial roles.

The Italian club said that they were "heartbroken to hear the news" and added: "The thoughts of everyone at AS Roma are with Luis Enrique and his family at this impossibly sad and difficult time,"
