LeBron James' outing with the Tune Squad in Space Jam 2 has failed to impress critics after receiving a shockingly low Metacritic score.
The hotly anticipated sequel to the 1996 cult classic finally made its way to US cinemas and HBO Max on 16th July.
But Space Jam 2, also known as Space Jam: A New Legacy, has been hit with mixed reviews during its opening weekend at the box office.

Aggregator website Metacritic has awarded director Malcolm Lee's film an underwhelming score of 38 based on 28 critic reviews.
The Playlist has handed Space Jam 2 the highest score on its Metacritic page so far, with the James-starring film receiving an 83 rating.
However, both the Los Angeles Times and The Guardian slammed the Space Jam sequel as the reviews have scored it 20 apiece on Metacritic.

In his review for The Guardian, Charles Bramesco criticised the runtime of Space Jam 2 compared with its predecessor and the "excruciating pop-culture catchphrases passed off as [humour]."
A New Legacy doesn't fare much better with its user score on Metacritic, holding a current rating of two out of 10 based on six reviews so far.

In comparison to the newly released film, 1996's Space Jam has a score of 59 on Metacritic based on 22 critics reviews.

And the Michael Jordan-starring film holds an even better user score with 6.9 out of 10, with 109 ratings submitted at the time of this writing.
Space Jam 2 follows the story of James and his son Dom, who wants to become a gaming developer rather than pursue a career in basketball like his dad.
However, the pair become trapped in the virtual world of Warner 3000 Server-Verse by a villainous AI called Al-G Rhythm.

James' hope of rescuing his son and finding his way home involves teaming up with the Looney Tunes characters to face Al-G's Goon Squad in a basketball showdown.
