Tonight has seen the end of arguably the greatest era in athletics history, with Usain Bolt running his final 100m race, at the World Athletics Championships in London.

The fastest man in world history was looking to add a 12th gold medal to the 11 he'd already accumulated at the 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015 Championships.

But the Jamaican was facing fierce competition, with American sprinter Christian Coleman pipping Bolt to first place during the 100m semi-final earlier today.

The race, at West Ham's London stadium, site of where Bolt won three Olympic gold medals at the 2012 Olympics games and set the Olympic 100m record with a time of 9.63 seconds, would be the 30-year-old's last 100m of his career as he retires at the end of the 2017 World Championships.

However, this time round, it wasn't to be, with Justin Gatlin taking the gold, Coleman the silver and Bolt having to settle for bronze.

Gatlin's victory was roundly booed by the London crowd, with the American sprinter having a history of doping controversies to his name, serving two lengthy bans during his career.

Regardless of tonight's result, Usain Bolt still bows out as the greatest 100m sprinter of all time and still has time to take home his final 4x100m gold before the curtain comes down on his remarkable career.
