BREAKING: Jordan Spieth Wins The Open

The American recovered from a wobble in the middle of his round to take the third major of his career.

Jordan Spieth overcame a poor day off the tees at Royal Birkdale to win the 2017 Open from playing partner Matt Kuchar having led from day one all the way to the end of the last day.

Since the end of the first round it has very much looked like Spieth's tournament to lose and after the third round on Saturday evening he led fellow American Matt Kuchar by three strokes.

However after four holes on Sunday the 23 year-old had bogeyed three holes and parred the other whilst his playing partner had birdied the second before bogeying the third to leave him level for the day.

Worse was to come for Spieth as he dropped another shot at the ninth and he was struggling off the tee. Having surrendered a five shot lead in the final round of the Masters in 2016 it looked a bit like history repeating.

Another dropped shot at 13 could have seen him lose his head, with Kuchar going round in pars, but instead the Texan bounced back with a birdie at 14 and an incredible eagle putt at 15 gave him a two shot lead.

Just as it looked to be all over though Kuchar came up with the third fourth birdie of his round at the 17th to pull within one shot of the leader but then the leader pulled off another birdie to head to the 18th two ahead.

The last was pretty much drama free for the winner and the world number three was able to take the crowd's applause as he walked up the 18th.

Spieth won back-to-back majors in 2015, winning the Masters and the US Open before finishing tied fourth and second in the remaining two majors that year.

He came tied second in the Masters the next year when he should have won the tournament and then spent the next two years not really coming close to winning one.

It was feared his collapse in 2016 might have stunted his chances of winning again but this weekend round the links course of Birkdale he has been absolutely brilliant and a worthy winner.

What a golfer!
