Wayne Rooney straddled two generations at Old Trafford, the Sir Alex Ferguson era and the post Fergie era. His colleague from the Scot's time at Old Trafford, Rio Ferdinand, sent him a great tribute.

In the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea one of England's best players was Rio Ferdinand and later that summer he found himself a £30 million signing at Manchester United.

Two years later at the Euros in Portugal it was Wayne Rooney who left everyone in awe and he too found himself treading the same path as Ferdinand by becoming a near £30 million transfer for the Red Devils.

At Old Trafford the pair won five Premier League titles together as well as the Champions League, the World Club Cup and three League Cups in what was one of Sir Alex's best teams.

Rooney's departure from Old Trafford yesterday was all but the end of that great side at United with only Michael Carrick left and Rio sent his former teammate a tribute on Instagram:

Rooney spent 13 years at United in all and in that time became the club captain and broke Sir Bobby Charlton's record as the club's all time top scorer before moving back to Everton yesterday.

Carrick, who joined two years after the 31 year-old and was part of the Champions League winning side of 2008, also sent a tribute to the striker:

The central midfielder could be in line to take the captain's armband from Rooney next season.

What a great servant to United the Evertonian was.
