Despite being one of Manchester United's most important players for the last few seasons, Ander Herrera may have recently found himself in the doghouse at Old Trafford.

The Spanish midfielder turned out 50 times under Jose Mourinho, last season and was even many United fans' choice to be handed the captain's armband following Wayne Rooney's return to Everton, although that honour was instead bestowed upon Michael Carrick.

This season, however, Herrera has seen himself reduced to a bench role following Nemanja Matic's arrival from Chelsea, but there may be more to the former Bilbao man's new life as a substitute than the Serbian's arrival from Stamford Bridge.

Herrera had to wait until Saturday's game with Stoke City to make his first start of the new campaign, and a bust up with Jose Mourinho at the end of last season may be the reason why.

According to the Mail, Herrera was reprimanded by Mourinho after inviting a friend with close ties to Celta Vigo to United's Carrington training ground at the end of last term, when United were facing the La Liga outfit in the Europa League semi-finals.

While Herrera's actions were innocent, Mourinho isn't believed to have necessarily seen it that way. After recognising the visitor, Mourinho ordered the 28-year-old into his office for a dressing down and may have played a part in Mourinho's decision to keep the Spain international on the bench for the beginning of this season.

An 'insider' told the Mail, "We used to joke that he was Jose's golden boy, and they were always chatting about the game. But the dynamic has changed since the end of last season. It's not the same."

Despite the disagreement with Mourinho, Herrera is happy at Old Trafford and is expected to sign a new contract, despite reported interest from Barcelona. Paul Pogba's four-six week lay off with a hamstring injury is also expected to open the door for Herrera's return to Mourinho's regular starting XI over the next month or so, as well, in a period that could be crucial for the pair's working relationship.
