Mexico Fan Goes To Russia After Telling Wife He's Off To The Shops

He was meant to be buying cigarettes and ended up going to the Confederations Cup, 10,000 km away from his hometown.

We've all told the odd lie to make sure we can go and watch the footy, whether that's telling your work your ill or telling the missus there's a leaving do. But that's usually popping to the pub or the local stadium, not a 19 hour flight like one Mexico fan.

Full disclosure I once rang in sick to work, not this job (yes I get paid to write, no you can't believe it because you think I'm a dimwitted tw@t who can't write), in order to travel to London and watch England at Wembley.

It was a good day because my best mate was back from Hong Kong, where he lived, and England beat Moldova 4-0 with Danny Welbeck scoring twice and Rickie Lambert bagging one too.

However the one downside was spending the walk to Wembley from the train station and most of the match terrified that the cameras would pick me out and my illness would be revealed as a lie.

Mexico fan Arturo Garcia took this idea to a whole new level after telling his wife he was going to the shop for cigarettes but instead he was heading to Russia to watch his country play in the Confederations Cup.

Speaking on Mexican tv, via La Republica, Garcia said, "I told my wife, I go for some cigars to Oxxo, but I did not tell him which one."

Garcia had to travel 265 km from Puebla to Monterrey, his hometown, before getting a flight to Germany to stay with family, although he didn't confirm if they had to keep up the lie, before driving to Russia.

The super fan damaged his achilles heel in Germany but continued on his journey nonetheless.

Having used his life savings to go on the trip to Russia he saw Mexico qualify for the cup semi-finals where they lost to eventual winners Germany 4-1. They then lost in the third and fourth place play-off to Portugal 2-1.

We doubt Garcia regretted his trip but you just hope he came home with some smokes and a bunch of flowers.
