The competition for the best catch of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 seemed to be over before it began when Ben Stokes took a backwards diving catch in England's opening fixture against South Africa on Thursday.
The Three Lions all-rounder appeared to have been caught out when Andile Phehlukwayo swept high towards the deep square-leg boundary with the score at 180-6, chasing 312 to win.
In a flash the 28-year-old readjusted before taking a staggering catch that set England on their way to victory.

Despite Stokes' heroics, there is now a new challenger to coveted prize of catch of the tournament, enter Sheldon Cottrell.
The West Indian left-armer was based deep in the outfield when his chance came. Sprinting to his left he took a sharp one-handed catch right on the boundary rope. As ball hit hand, Cottrell was nudged off balance and only the 29-year-old's quick thinking saved the chance.
Tossing the ball into the air he jumped over the rope to regain his balance before returning to the pitch and completing a stunning piece of individual fielding.
