The British flat racing season officially gets underway this weekend with the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas taking centre stage.

Up first, Saturday's QIPCO 2000 Guineas, which looks undeniably more open than ever before - especially with the defection of Dewhurst hero St Mark's Basilica.

But despite the various form lines and intriguing narratives going on elsewhere, ten-time winner trainer Aidan O'Brien still has a typically strong grip on the first Classic of the season.

Dewhurst runner-up Wembley, presumably the choice of Ryan Moore, looks a more than able deputy given his consistent, high-class form shown.

Meanwhile Battleground - the mount of Frankie Dettori, who went close on Wichita for O'Brien in the same race last year - is another big player based on what he did in 2020.

But it is Wembley who is the increasingly popular choice with punters - with his price shortening over the past week ahead of the race.

Jordan Cox, trader at Star Sports, said: "The 2000 Guineas looks the most open race in years, with Thunder Moon now 4/1 favourite with us.

"The main O'Brien charge Wembley is now 5/1 after the news Ryan Moore has opted to ride him over stable companion Battleground.

"One Ruler was the other one for money, but is now weak in the market out to 12/1 after William Buick selected to ride Charlie Appleby's other runner, Master Of The Seas."

As history dictates, trying to find the winner of the opening filles' Classic is a little more fraught with danger, a point highlighted by big-priced victories for Homecoming Queen and Billesdon Brook in recent times.

Similar to the colts' version, you wouldn't have gone too far wrong backing O'Brien's runners blind in the last 15 years, so it is safe to say the cream rises to the top as far as trainers are concerned.

With that said, look no further than the red hot favourite Santa Barbara for this race.

"It's not often you see the favourite for the 1000 Guineas coming into the race on the back of one race," added Cox.

"The vibes have been very strong from O'Brien and she is now 6/5 favourite with us after being backed all the way down from 10/1 over the past several weeks.

"It will be interesting to see if support is sustained on the day."
