Martin Brundle calls Thibaut Courtois Spanish during Monaco grid walk

Martin Brundle calls Thibaut Courtois Spanish during Monaco grid walk

Courtois was one of the most recognisable faces on the grid walk for F1's most famous race and Brundle made an amusing error.

Martin Brundle made his latest amusing error on a Formula One grid walk, as he spoke to Real Madrid star Thibaut Courtois in Monaco.

There are few more iconic stages in any sporting contest than F1's annual drive around the streets of Monaco, even if some of the races leave a lot to be desired.

The glamorous French principality brings out many of the big names for the races as they get to enjoy watching the race from yachts on the harbour.

That of course gives Brundle the chance to interview celebrities, as he has become famed for doing on his pre race grid walks, including getting a chat with Roger Federer a few weeks ago, eventually.

One problem for the former McLaren driver when he's pushed into the uncomfortable positions on the grid is not knowing exactly who he'll come across.

Perhaps his worst moment came at last year's Miami Grand Prix, another race that is heavily populated by celebrities, when he though Duke basketball star Paolo Banchero was NFL megastar Patrick Mahomes.

On Sunday the 63-year-old made his latest awkward error as he walked the grid ahead of the race in Monaco and welcomed 'Spanish' goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

"As a Spaniard, you've got Fernando Alonso and the lovely Carlos Sainz," the Sky Sports commentator said to the Belgian when discussing his fellow 'countrymen' who were racing.

"Ye indeed," the Real star said, not adding to the embarrassment of his interviewer.

"In Spain, we are rooting a lot for this victory of Fernando. He's in a good starting position today so let's see what can happen," the keeper added.

Brundle then probably got told of his error through an earpiece, saying: "And of course he's Belgian, not Spanish."

"Martin Brundle calling Thibaut Courtois Spanish perfectly sums up his grid walk," noted one fan.

"Martin Brundle calling Belgian international Courtois a Spaniard is peak Martin Brundle grid walk," added a second.

On the former Chelsea star's reply to the mistake, a third said: "Martin Brundle mistakes Thibaut Courtois as being Spanish. Courtois is so polite he just goes along with it. Lovely stuff."

"If Brundle says Courtois is Spanish, he's Spanish," exclaimed another.

And a fifth pleaded, "Please protect Brundle at all costs."

Whilst Brundle's errors often leave fans amused by the awkward nature of what is going on, the Brit was involved in some controversy last year.

In America last year he bumped into Hollywood star Brad Pitt but the Fight Club actor refused to speak to the commentator as he approached.

Brundle was then involved in a bit of a social media spat with fellow F1 broadcaster Will Buxton, with the pair having different accounts of whether he should have attempted to speak to Pitt or not.
