Wes Morgan Tips Idris Elba To Play Him If Leicester's Premier League Triumph Is Made Into A Movie

Wes Morgan Tips Idris Elba To Play Him If Leicester's Premier League Triumph Is Made Into A Movie

“People love an underdog story and ours is the best there's ever been."

Wes Morgan has tipped Hollywood superstar Idris Elba to play him if Leicester’s miraculous Premier League title win is ever made into a film.

Claudio Ranieri’s side famously beat odds of 5000-1 to clinch the title in the 2015-16 season, with Morgan captaining the team to one of sport’s greatest ever upsets.

There have long been rumours that Leicester’s fairytale triumph could be made into a Hollywood blockbuster and Morgan says he has spoken to producers about the possibility of a movie.

The former Leicester skipper says he only has one man in mind to play him if it happens – The Wire and Luther actor Elba.

“People love an underdog story and ours is the best there's ever been,” said Morgan, speaking exclusively to Ladbrokes at its launch of the 5-A-Side Bet on Leicester v Newcastle.

“If there's ever going to be a film made about that season then my answer's always going to be the same... Idris Elba has got to play me!

“I've spoken to a few producers about it, I'm not sure whether it'll happen or not now. Maybe Jamie Vardy has got something in the pipeline.

“It's five years down the line now, but maybe when we've all retired someone will put something together on our story.”

Morgan added: “I could never get bored of talking about that title-winning campaign. At the time the thought of winning the Premier League was just never on the cards.

“We'd just stayed up in the previous season and things obviously just went from strength to strength from there.

“It was such a great mix of players within the team, but we were really limited in terms of previous successes as individuals.

“I know Robert Huth had been successful with Chelsea earlier on in his career, but besides that we were just a bunch of really talented players that hadn't quite reached those heights.”

One film based on Leicester’s recent success is already in production.

A box office film about Jamie Vardy's incredible rise from Non-League to Premier League is currently in the works, with Oscar-winning producers agreeing to join the project.

British screenwriter Adrian Butchart, best known for being one of the writers for Goal! and Goal! 2: Living the Dream, has agreed to make the film with Oscar-winning producers Gareth-Ellis Unwin, Simon Egan and their company Bedlam Productions, according to The Mirror

Speaking earlier this year after Leicester's FA Cup final win over Chelsea, Butchart told The Mirror: “We know Jamie to be among the world’s best players and his continued success is inspirational to us and the film.

“We had been expecting to shoot the movie last year but sadly for our industry, as with so many others, the pandemic got in the way.

“Especially given that the story of Leicester’s victory will require large crowd scenes for which we are keen to feature real fans rather than rely solely on computer generated imagery.

“We haven’t been slacking though and used the time to continue to hone the script and brought in some new exciting partners.

“We are now looking forward to casting and getting into production as soon as guidelines safely allow, hopefully with a full stadium.”
