'Depay' Trends Because Typing Lyon Forward's First Name Leads To Twitter Suspension

There seems to be no reason but you can't type the word 'Memphis' into Twitter without being suspended from the platform.

Memphis Depay started trending on Twitter on Sunday for the strangest reason, with users tweeting his first name getting suspended from the platform.

We've all seen the name of a celebrity 'trending' on social media for seemingly no reason and wondered what in the world was going on.

Everyone has panicked at the sight of David Attenborough in the list of trending topics on Twitter, only to find out it's the great man's birthday.

On Sunday there was an even weird occurrence on Twitter, with Lyon forward Memphis Depay trending, or at least his surname was.

It was all down to a strange bug on the platform that started suspending people's accounts for tweeting the word 'memphis,' specifically without the capital letter.

Football fans, and perhaps the players more so, will find a certain irony that people can be banned for tweeting the word 'Memphis' for no real reason but can seemingly get away with racism.

OVer the past few months there has been a number of incidents of awful messages sent to black players on social media, either on Twitter or Instagram, with little having been done.

Apparently abuse is fine but the first name of a former Manchester United and PSV winger who plays in Ligue 1 isn't okay, what a weird world we live in!
