Why Jurgen Klopp Decided Against Making A Move For Christian Pulisic

The Liverpool manager has long been a big fan of the Borussia Dortmund winger but decided against a move back in the summer.

Christian Pulisic' move to Chelsea, announced on Wednesday morning, will have come to a blow to some who wanted him at their club but not Jurgen Klopp who decided against signing him in the summer.

Chelsea decided to splash the cash on Christian Pulisic by signing the player for around £58 million although he won't be part of their side this season, moving back to Dortmund on loan for the rest of the campaign.

The American is only 20 and it was a large fee for a player who only has 18 months left on his contract and hasn't been a guaranteed starter for Dortmund this season.

But there is no doubting his talent and there would have been plenty of clubs hoping to make a move for him in the summer or next January when he could have started negotiating for a free transfer the following summer.

Chelsea though have jumped ahead of the queue to sign the winger, who can also play as a number 10.

Liverpool have long been linked with a move for the 20 year old and he is a player who Jurgen Klopp likes but according to the Times back in the summer he decided against making a move for the winger.

That's because, despite his talent, Pulisic had scored just seven goals and put on just 14 assists in the previous two years in the Bundesliga.

In that time Pulisic made 61 appearances in the league for German league leaders so it's not exactly a great return for such a talented player, in a team that generally like to attack.

The Reds did make an £11 million bid for the winger when he was just 17, in the summer of 2016, but were aware the price had risen to around £60 million last summer.

This season Pulisic has started just five Bundesliga games for Lucien Favre's side, scoring once and putting on two assists, in comparison teenager Jadon Sancho has started 10 times, scoring six and assisting seven goals.

With his current stats the American wouldn't have got in Liverpool's starting line up and was too expensive to be a substitute, Chelsea will hope he's soon involved in plenty more goals.
