Liverpool fans look away now. Manchester City have placed Virgil van Dijk top of their transfer wish list for the post Christmas sales as Pep Guardiola plans for the next 18 months of transfers.

Jurgen Klopp seemingly became so obsessed with signing Southampton centre back Virgil van Dijk last summer that he forgot any other defenders might improve his team and didn't sign anyone.

That might have been in part because the Reds scouting team have been trapped in the south coast unable to get out for years and are only capable of watching Saints' games, I jest of course don't take it too seriously.

But the Dutch defender ended up staying put despite interest from Klopp, as well as Chelsea and league leaders Manchester City. However that could change in the summer.

According to the Telegraph Van Dijk tops Guardiola's wanted list for January, ahead of Jonny Evans and Inigo Martinez, and talks have apparently already opened between the two clubs as City hope to avoid Liverpool's troubles from the summer.

Before the season started the Saints accused Liverpool of tapping up their player as he seemed desperate for a move to Anfield and Klopp's team backed down from any rumours in order to avoid punishment from the Premier League.

Van Dijk could cost in the region of £60 million but Vincent Kompany's constant injury problems added to John Stones' recent injury has proved that the league leaders still need some back up in the position and the Dutchman is as good as any other options.

Nicolas Otamendi and Stones would continue to be the first choice centre backs for City but any addition to the squad would be ahead of Equilium Mangala and Kompany.

The report also confirms the earlies news that City will wait till the summer to sign Alexis Sanchez and that a 'European style' defensive midfielder will also be high on their wanted list in the summer with Yaya Toure exiting the Etihad.

No left back will be signed to cover for Benjamin Mendy in January but it seems that a centre back will be brought to make City even stronger.

Can anything stop them from being champions of England?
