This summer there's no doubting that Manchester United will be spending money to try and get closer to Manchester City. Jose Mourinho is eyeing up a battle for a Premier League midfielder to improve his side.

If anyone wants to get close to Manchester City next season they'll have to pay big to get it done.

Sure there's a chance that Liverpool will be a bigger threat next term but they've already spent big on Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita in preparation for next season and there's no doubt they'll spend more in the summer too.

Take a look at these Manchester United signings who have flopped:

At Old Trafford they've been spending big for the last couple of years to right the wrongs of previous summers and in January they signed Alexis Sanchez but the project is far from over.

There's a good chance that in the summer Mourinho will have to sign a full back or two whilst the same will likely be true at centre back but perhaps his most needy position is central midfield.

United might have bought Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba in previous summers but with Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini likely to leave in the summer they need reinforcements. According to the Mirror they will go head-to-head with Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs for Watford's Abdoulaye Doucoure.

The report says that there was a United scout watching the Frenchman in Watford's 1-0 win against West Brom last Saturday and the 25 year-old has impressed with seven Premier League goals so far this season.

Dacoure's dynamism is a big part of what has attracted Mourinho to the player but he faces competition from some of the rest of the Premier League's big names.

The Red Devils will likely bring two central midfielders to the club this summer. Despite the arrival of Scott McTominay to the first team Michael Carrick will retire and join the clubs backroom staff meanwhile Fellaini is yet to sign a new deal and is likely to leave in the summer.

Watford won't want their star midfielder to go on the cheap especially as he has two years left on his contract.

Will Dacoure end up at Old Trafford?
