Transfer prices have been getting higher and higher since Luis Figo broke the world record when he moved to Real Madrid from Barcelona for €62 million in 2000.

Since then the transfer record has been broken on six occasions but 39 other transfers have officially been worth more than the deal for the Portuguese forward.

High transfer prices have increased throughout and football, through television deals and rich owners, has only got wealthier, so it's no surprise to see 15 clubs have spent over €1 billion in the past 20 years.

According to Transfermarkt, Chelsea are the biggest spenders since the turn of the century and the top four have all spent over €2 billion in that time.

Before 2003 Chelsea weren't a big spending club but they were the first side to really have a huge cash injection from a new wealthy owner, when Roman Abramovich took over.

The money has served them well as they've won five Premier League titles, five FA Cup, three League Cups, the Europa League and the Champions League in that time.

Money doesn't always buy you success, but sometimes it does.
