Spurs Are Closing In On First Signing Of The Summer

Last season's runners up have been fairly inactive so far...

Mauricio Pochettino is looking to add that extra ingredient to his Spurs side that have been excellent in the past two seasons, finishing third and then second, but ultimately missing that little bit more quality.

It's not in Daniel Levy's nature to splash the cash too much, with Spurs' philosophy at present placing emphasis on assembling a side brimming with young English talent, and a fair few Belgians amongst others completing the side.

And though it isn't a massive surprise to see Tottenham not following in the footsteps of Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United in adding to their squad by spending big bucks, one would think Spurs fans are keen on seeing their club do a bit of business sooner rather than later.

While it's not the most exciting signing in history, the North London club are said to be nearing their first summer signing in preparation for next season's campaign at Wembley Stadium whilst the White Hart Lane site is renovated.

Spurs are in need of a right-back to replace Kyle Walker, who moved to Manchester City in a big-money move, and Portuguese outlet Record say that Hoffenheim defender Jeremy Toljan is close to joining.

The 22-year old, who was part of the Germany Under 21 side that won the European Championships, has attracted strong interest from Benfica, who are in the hunt for a Nelson Semedo replacement, but it's thought that the Portuguese side have pulled out of the race, and Toljan will now be Spurs-bound.

Kieran Tripper would appear to be Mauricio Pochettino's first-choice for the right-back berth next term, having displaced Kyle Walker at the back-end of last season. The City youth product signed a new Spurs deal five days ago, and he will now likely compete with Toljan for a spot in the Tottenham XI next term.

Spurs have been linked with PSG's Serge Aurier, but Toljan would come as a much cheaper option.

The youngster, considered to be one of the most promising defensive prospects around, can also play at a left-back - the sort of versatility that will prove highly useful for Pochettino.

Toljan made 20 appearances in the Bundesliga as Hoffenheim finished in third place and earned a spot in next season's Champions League.
