Spain had a horrendous World Cup as far as their expectations go and it led to the inevitable resigning of stand in manager Fernando Hierro but now they have their targets set on their new man.

Remembering a world before the World Cup started is proving very difficult now that we're in this utopia of brilliant football and weather so incredible that even in Manchester I've forgotten what rain looks like.

But if you think really hard you might remember that on the eve of the tournament Spain decided to sack Julen Lopetegui.

The former Porto manager didn't lose a single game in charge of the national team in the two years he was in charge but it was announced three days before their opening game against Portugal that he would become Real Madrid manager after the tournament.

Worrying the announcement might cause disarray in the squad the Spanish FA decided to make sure there was disarray by sacking him and having Hierro take over, whose only previous managerial experience was at Oviedo in the second division.

It didn't go well with Spain losing on penalties to Russia in the second round and Hierro quit. Now Marca are reporting that Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales will recommend Luis Enrique at a board meeting today.

Enrique would tick all the boxes that the president is looking for with the former Celta manager having no job to be bought out of, being Spanish, played for the national team, managed at the highest level and wanting to manage internationally.

The 48 year old's contract would be for two years, taking them up to the Euros in 2020 that is due to be played at multiple venues around Europe.

Enrique was asked two years ago about taking over from Vicente del Bosque and said, "Would I like to be coach of the national team? Yes, a lot."

The likes of Quique Sanchez Flores, Michel, Roberto Martinez and Victor Sanchez del Amo had previously been mentioned as possible replacement for Hierro but Enrique looks set to get the job now.

After a year out of football, following his stint as Barcelona boss, he had been linked with the a move to the Premier League with both Arsenal and Chelsea.
