Sheffield United are hoping to pull off one of the biggest surprises in the transfer window as they look to land former Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery.

Ribery left Bayern at the end of the season after 12 years at the club but the 36 year old is looking for his next challenge rather than retiring and it could be in England.

According to German outlet Kicker, newly promoted Sheffield United want to bring the winger to the Premier League but he is currently hoping for a bigger club.

During his time in the Bundesliga Ribery was a German champion on nine occasions, also winning the German Cup six times and the Champions League once.

The 36 year old left the Allianz Arena at the end of the season when his contract expired, with fellow legendary winger Arjen Robben also leaving, and is now looking for a new club.

Chris Wilder's Sheffield United team would be a surprise choice with the Blades having only just won promotion back into the Premier League.

The Yorkshire side have been out of the top tier since 2007 and even dropped down to League One in 2011, spending six seasons in the third tier.

Wilder has worked wonders with them though and after getting them back into the Championship took just two seasons to return them to the Premier League.

Speaking back in May Ribery suggested he would be open to moving to Australia to play for former colleague Markus Babbel, now in charge at Western Sydney Wanderers, saying, "Why should I not move to colleague Babbel? I do not know. There are many options. I'm not sure yet where I'm going."

Perhaps that's not now the case if he's not willing to move to a Premier League club, no matter how big or small they are.

Is Ribery to Sheffield United the strangest transfer rumour of the summer or have you heard an odder one?
