Maurizio Sarri Explains What Needs To Happen For Callum Hudson-Odoi To Play More

Maurizio Sarri Explains What Needs To Happen For Callum Hudson-Odoi To Play More

Callum Hudson-Odoi got the chance to show what he can do for Chelsea on Thursday night and bagged himself a goal in the process but it doesn't sound like he'll be a regular starter any time soon.

Chelsea fans might have been banging their heads on their desks today finding out that their club had been given a two transfer window ban on Friday but two men at the club would have been even more annoyed.

Maurizio Sarri would have been hoping that he could strengthen his squad in the summer and buy more players who fit in with his system. Callum Hudson-Odoi would have been hoping to force a move away from the club in the summer.

Both men are unlikely to get what they want after Friday's announcement. Of course at this point the manager might be quite lucky if he's still in west London come the summer.

Hudson-Odoi has become a symbol of what Blues fans dislike about Sarri but he did get to start on Thursday night and even scored against Malmo.

After the match the Italian was asked about the teenager getting more game time and his answer wasn't too optimistic:

"You need to understand that, in the same position, we have Pedro, Willian and Hazard," said Sarri.

"There isn't in England another 18-year-old player with 14 matches in the first team. So I think that we are using him in the right way at the moment.

"Of course, the 20 matches this season will be 30 matches in the next, and 40 in two years.

"If I am at the club and I want Callum to play consistently, I have to sell another winger. Otherwise the manager is in trouble."

Sarri does partially have a point about the 18 year olds game time in comparison with other teenagers in Europe, with Jadson Sancho probably the only exception.

However what has frustrated Blues fans is the lack of the teenager in the Premier League and even in the recent FA Cup loss against Manchester United the former Napoli manager decided to bring on a defender ahead of the winger, even though they were 2-0 down.

Should Chelsea's ban be upheld it seems unlikely Hazard, Willian or Pedro would be going anywhere, and Hudson-Odoi might be forced to stay put too.
