David de Gea to Real Madrid is the transfer story of your nightmares, it follows us everywhere, ready to sneak up and pounce just when you thought you'd shaken it and now Real think something makes a deal more likely.

Of course if you happen to be a Manchester United fan then the idea of losing David de Gea is probably panic inducing, it's a code red kind of problem if Jose Mourinho's side lose the human wall.

For three years in a row after Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford David de Gea was Manchester United's player of the season, a run only ended by Ander Herrera last season, and he's likely to win a fourth award this season, making him the first player to win the club award more than three times.

The Red Devils are lucky to have him. Both because without him they'd be really bad and because he was a broken fax machine away from leaving in the summer of 2015.

Back then he was supposed to swap Manchester for Madrid and go to Real and ever since Los Blancos have continuously been linked with him, or some other goalkeeper.

Now, according to Goal, the Champions League champions believe that United's loss in the competition to Sevilla gives them a chance to sign De Gea and they can persuade him to move due to United's lack of success.

Despite a collection of cup wins in the last few years the La Liga side believe they can capitalise on a perceived growing frustration in the Spanish keeper at a lack of on field success.

The embarrassing defeat to Sevilla and their 16 point deficit to Manchester City at the top of the table means that the FA Cup is there only chance of adding to the trophy cabinet this season.

The transfers that never were XI:

The Red Devils are thought to have started talks with the 27 year old over signing a new deal at Old Trafford, with his current contract only running till 2019, although the club have an option for another year, and are expected to offer him £275k-a-week.

Real will probably look for a goalkeeper once again in the summer and they'll try everything in their power to sign De Gea. Could the loss to Sevilla pave the way for that move?
