Aymeric Laporte has got Manchester City fans excited about signing Lionel Messi once again, just by answering a simple question on Twitter.

City looked likely to land Messi before this season when Barcelona's all time top goalscorer decided he wanted to leave the Nou Camp.

Pep Guardiola's side were by far the favourites to land the six time Ballon d'Or winner but, after being told he couldn't leave for free, he stayed put in Spain.

With Messi available for free next summer there's a good chance that City will go for him and fans think that Laporte's Twitter activity is another hint it could happen.

The centre back was asked who his toughest opponent has been and he answered with a goat and an Argentinian flag.

Amusingly the lack of clarification on who Laporte was actually talking about led to Spurs fans hijacking the replies on social media.

The fans decided that the former Athletic Bilbao player must have meant Messi's fellow Argentinian Erik Lamela as the GOAT, but we aren't too sure.

Laporte is very important to City's chances of regaining the Premier League title from Liverpool, as was proved when he missed much of last season, and his partnership with Ruben Dias is starting to grow.

The pair have only conceded twice playing together, including the penalty against Jurgen Klopp's side last weekend, and the 26-year-old is clearly enjoying their partnership.

Replying to a tweet from Marathonbet, Laporte, who has been called 'the door' fans in the past suggested that the former Benfica man is the lock to his door.

Will Messi sign for City next summer?
