Jose Mourinho has been dealt a bit of a blow as one of the defensive midfielders he's been linked with this summer has decided to stay with his current team until 2021.

It is no secret that Jose Mourinho would like to add a defensive midfielder to his team, Chelsea's Nemanja Matic and Spurs' Eric Dier have been his main targets.

However Chelsea don't seem to want to play ball when it comes to Matic, certainly not with United after the Lukaku incident, and Spurs have no interest in selling Dier.

That leaves the Red Devils searching Europe for the answer to there problems with only Michael Carrick as a frontline option with Daley Blind's versatility making him an option.

One man United had been linked with was Roma talisman Radja Nainggolan but the club website confirmed the player was staying.

The statement on the site read: "Roma are delighted to confirm that midfielder Radja Nainggolan has signed a new four-year contract with the club."

The player added, "I think I have demonstrated that this is what I always wanted. So I'm very happy, especially that the club and I can continue our adventure and move forward together."

Nainggolan's contract had run until 2020 and whilst the new deal is only an extra year it's the symbolism that he has no intention of leaving that is just as pertinent.

Mourinho won't be the only manager in England a bit gutted by the news with Antonio Conte long linked with a move for the 29 year old, although the Blues signing of Bakayoko this summer softens the blow.

Roma President James Pallotta said of the news, "We're delighted Radja has committed his long-term future - and the most important years of his career - to the club.

"Last season, he was arguably one of the best midfielders in the world and it's no surprise that he was linked with some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

"But there was never any question of him going elsewhere - he loves Roma and we love having him here."

Having lost Totti this summer the last thing the Stadio Olimpico team wanted was to lose another of their most important players.
