Steven Fletcher is set to follow in the footsteps of Joey Barton by leaving behind Marseille to head to the Championship, after agreeing to sign for Sheffield Wednesday.

The Scotland international spent the back end of last season on loan at the South of France club, after being deemed surplus to requirements by Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce, who has now decided to release the former Wolves and Burnley striker, after four years at the Stadium of Light.

Fletcher has signed a four year deal with the Owls, despite being heavily tipped to join Celtic since returning from Marseille. The move means Fletcher will drop down to the second tier of English football for the first time in his career, as he left both Burnley and Wolves immediately following their relegations from the Premier League.
