After graduating from Everton's academy, he broke into their first team before completing a switch to Manchester United.
But after 16 seasons in England's top flight, it appears he's set to end his association with the Premier League.
Reports suggest Rooney has agreed a contract in principle to head to the States, in a deal worth a believed £12.5 million.
His next professional career move has everyone talking including former teammate Neville.

"I thought it was nice that he went back to Everton, but it never quite works when you go back," he said on Sky Sports.
Neville added: "My view is that to experience something completely different would be a great thing for him - to get away and try something different.
"He's got 30/35 years of his life to think about, coming pretty quickly. To experience different things, different culture, different environment, and to learn about new things is not a bad thing for him."
Rooney had actually held talks with a host of American clubs before re-joining Everton in 2017.
