Judging by Barcelona's emphatic El Clasico victory, they aren't in any real need of reinforcing their side ahead of the transer window. But Louis van Gaal has urged one of his former players to complete a switch to Catalunya.

Ernesto Valverde's charges kept up their impressive league form by beating old rivals Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Saturday.

But while they comfortably lead the La Liga, his side continue to be linked with new players with the January transfer window just around the corner.

Barcelona remain heavily connected to Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho, among others.

And their former boss van Gaal feels Manchester United's Daley Blind should ditch Old Trafford for Camp Nou.

"Daley Blind is better off going to Barcelona, than staying with Man United," he said.

Blind, 27, was drafted in by van Gaal during his United reign, and featured regularly. Though under Jose Mourinho, it's been a completely different story.

He's only played four league games this season, as his future remains unclear.

And as his fellow Dutchman points out, Blind isn't even on the bench sometimes.

"He is not even on the bench for United sometimes. Daley can play in more than one position and at Barcelona he would never be sat in the stand," he added.

On what he'd bring to Barcelona, van Gaal said: "I think Daley would fit in better at Barcelona anyway. His level and his style of play is more suited to Spain than England. 'He can operate as a central defender who builds up the play. He can be a defensive midfielder or an attacking left back. Daley can do it all."
