In what may come as something of a surprise to you, Liverpool have made an approach for a Premier League player who doesn't play for Southampton.

Although he used to.

Fresh off the embarrassment of the Virgil van Dijk deal breaking down, following an official complaint to the Premier League by the Saints over Liverpool's approach for the Dutch centre half, the Reds have diverted their attentions elsewhere.

Namely, to Arsenal and the £25 million rated Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to enter the final year of his contract with the Gunners and discussions over a new deal have reached a stalemate, opening up the chance of the England international moving on, this summer.

And, according to the Mirror, Anfield officials have made their first official approach for the former Southampton youngster as they look to beat Manchester City and Chelsea to his signature.

The 23-year-old has struggled to hold down a regular starting berth in Arsene Wenger's first team since he arrived at the Emirates stadium in 2011.

In the six years since he joined the Gunners, Oxlade-Chamberlin has made 194 appearances, scoring 20 times.

With no Champions League football available to the midfielder should he remain with Arsenal for next season, the opportunity to play in Europe's elite competition may sway the England international towards Anfield instead of signing a new deal in North London.

Losing Oxlade-Chamberlain would represent a bitter blow for the Gunners, who are currently trying desperately to tie down Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez to new deals, with both players also entering the final 12 months of their current contracts.

The Mirror have also reported that Arsenal have given Liverpool little encouragement with their initial approach, but that is unlikely to deter the Reds, with Jurgen Klopp making Oxlade-Chamberlain, who he has been a long term admirer of, one of his priority signings for the summer transfer window.
