Gennaro Gattuso Leaves Fiorentina Just Three Weeks After Appointment

Gennaro Gattuso has left Fiorentina, just three weeks after taking the job, due to a row over transfers involving his agent Jorge Mendes.

Gattuso was in charge of Napoli last season, but was sacked after the club failed to secure Champions League football due to a draw with Verona on the final day.

That allowed Juventus to sneak past them into the top four, even if the Old Lady's place in UEFA competitions was in doubt for a short time over the European Super League fiasco.

Gattuso was soon back in management though, as he was named the Fiorentina manager on May 25th, however it hasn't even lasted until he was to officially start on July 1st.

In a statement on Thursday morning, Fiorentina confirmed the two parties had parted ways. "ACF Fiorentina and Mister Rino Gattuso, by mutual agreement, have decided not to follow up on the previous agreements and therefore not to start the next sporting season together.

"The Club immediately set to work to identify a technical choice that would guide the Viola team towards the results that Fiorentina and the City of Florence deserve."

According to reports in Italy, it's all down to the involvement of super agent Mendes, who represents Gattuso, as well as the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jose Mourinho and most of the Wolves squad.

Whilst the former AC Milan midfielder hadn't officially taken the reins at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, he had begun talks with the club over transfer targets.

The new manager, and his agent, had suggested Porto midfielder Sergio Oliveira and Valencia forward Goncalo Guedes, who both happen to be represented by Mendes.

The Viola's owner Rocco Commisso instead wanted cheaper targets and that caused the relationship to become strained.

Stuttgart striker Nico Gonzalez was also thought to be a target for the club, but he now looks set to move to the Premier League with Brighton, which may not have helped things.

While Gattuso's feat of being in charge for just 23 days is impressive, it actually pales in comparison to Marcelo Bielsa's time in Italy.

The Leeds United boss might be popular in Yorkshire but he's probably less well liked in Rome, where he lasted just two days as Lazio manager in 2016!

Gattuso could find himself replaced by World Cup winning teammate Andrea Pirlo, who was sacked by Juventus despite nicking Napoli's top-four spot on the final day.

Sometimes management is good, sometimes it's sh*t!
